The Fine Art of Registering Prime SAMMs
There are some simple guidelines for becoming a member of the Prime SAMM
Breeders Society of Australia Inc and registering and transferring your
SAMM sheep.
1. Membership
To become a member of the Society contact the secretary of your region
and request a membership form. The list of secretaries may be found here.
2. Flock Code and Stud Name
Once you have joined the Prime SAMM Breeders Society of Australia through
one of the region’s secretaries, you are asked to complete a form
advising your flock code (a two or three letter code) and a stud name
(up to 16 characters).
- If you do not already have a membership number then one will be allocated
to you.
- The flock code forms part of the identity of your sheep.
- You must have a flock code and a stud name before registering any
SAMM sheep.
3. Registrations
Registration forms are available from the ABRI office or they can be emailed
to you in an Excel format.
To complete the form
- Fill in the ident of the lamb to be registered. This takes the format
of a three letter flock code, e.g. GFS; year of birth, e.g. 04 for the
year 2004; and then the four digit individual number of your choice,
e.g. 6893.
Sheep bred in your flock get your individual flock code and prefix and
keep this for their lifetime.
- Complete the next four columns for the lamb, i.e. ET or natural;
number born; sex of lamb and date of birth. Lambs can only be registered
if they are out of registered SAMM sires and dams.
- Fill in the idents of the sires and dams (this format is the same
as for the lambs where the flock code is that of the breeder of the
sire or the dam).
You will be issued with SAMM red button tags with individual numbers
and they can be inserted in the eards of your lambs. This is now not
compulsory as some states are finding that there are too many tags and
not enough ear. The fee for registration is $3.85 including G.S.T.
4. Transfers
Following the sale of your sheep, a transfer form must be completed and
signed by the vendor (Once again obtainable from the office or emailed
to you) and sent into the ABRI office for processing into the purchaser's
herd. The fee for this is $2.20 including G.S.T. per animal.
